We often get asked the question: How much is it going to cost to add my teen driver? Statistics show that a new driver is a riskier driver. Insurance companies know that and charge accordingly. However, there are a few discounts that we can give to help soften the blow.

  1. The good student discount. If your new driver gets a 3.0 or B average at school, they qualify for this discount. It saves you about 15% off of what they cost to be added to the policy.
  2. The away at school discount. This applies to a college kid that goes to school full-time, does not take a car with them to school, and the school is more than 100 miles away from home. It saves another 5%. You get to keep it as long as they are still enrolled, even if they come home for 3 months in the summer.
  3. Telematics discount. Depending on your carrier, they might offer a drive-tracking program that will reward safe driving habits. This is an amazing tool for new drivers because it can give them instant feedback on how to drive safer and if it saves money at the same time it’s a win-win!

Give us a call if you think your teen driver should qualify for any of these discounts!
